You may remember the headlines several years ago regarding Whitney Houston’s engagement ring.
When Whitney Houston passed away in February of 2012, she left an estate to her daughter, Bobbi Katrina Brown that was valued at over 20 million dollars.
Included in her estate was a large diamond ring that was speculated by estate jewelry buyer Neil Lane to be worth around $250,000!
Although it was originally Whitney Houston’s engagement ring, Nick Gordon would later propose to Bobbi with this ring. Whitney took Gordon in at the age of 12, and raised him alongside Bobbi.
Usually we wouldn’t hit you with the tabloid headlines, but this story caught our attention. Obviously at Jonathan’s we love anything jewelry related.
This quarter of a million dollar ring definitely found it’s way on to our radar. (Her estate would eventually value the ring much more.)
Whitney Houston’s ring specifics included:
– The ring was primarily made with 18k gold.
– It featured a large cushion cut center stone, and was surrounded by several accent stones.
– The ring had a whopping 10 carat total weight of diamonds.
– Bobbi Brown posted a picture of the ring on Instagram shortly before it disappeared.
There has been speculation that foul play has been involved within Bobbi Brown’s family, but there have been no confirmed reports.
This story unfortunately brings to light a real issue that our customers have to deal with from time to time: keeping their jewelry investment safe.

Let’s discuss three strategies to keep your jewelry safe for years to come:
1. Purchase Ring Insurance:
When you receive your custom engagement ring from Jonathan’s Fine Jewelers, be sure to request information about jewelry insurance as well.
Insurance is a great way to protect your custom designed ring, and is generally very affordable. A lot of time and research goes in to your purchase before you even walk in our showroom, and ring insurance can help you recreate your ring if something were to happen to it.
2. Buy a safe:
Having a quality safe is an easy way to protect your jewelry from theft, or misplacement. Look for a safe that has an anchoring system, as this will prevent the entire safe from being taken in a break in.
There will be plenty of times that your future fiancé will take her ring off for different actives (think swimming, boating, outdoor sports) and will need a secure location to keep it.
3. Be Aware of Your Surroundings:
This may be the most important strategy for protecting your fine jewelry. If you or your loved one needs to take off their jewelry for temporary storage, make sure it is not in a public area.
While we hope someone wouldn’t try to snag your ring when you aren’t looking, we know better. Always be aware of your surroundings, and be as private as possible when it comes to your jewelry investment.
