Now, you all aren’t dumb, so I don’t need to tell you that the watch hands point to the numbers on the watch face and this is how you tell the time. And, because I have the smartest readers out there, I also don’t need to tell you that the day or date feature, if the watch has one, would be located somewhere on the watch face.
I also don’t think I have to say that the watch face sits under the crystal so it can remain pristine, and that it can be easily damaged by water or dust and that it is a very delicate part of the watch, right? I didn’t think I needed to tell any of you that, so I am going to talk about the different types of faces there are.
The Watch Face
Just like the case, the watch face has changed over the years. Today it can be plain or blinged out, have numbers or not, be any color under the sun or over the rainbow, glow in the dark and even have wings painted on it. But, no matter what it looks like, it still has one main purpose, to tell you what the time is.
The Dial & The Subdial
The dial is the actual watch face and the subdial is a smaller dial set within the main dial, used to display an additional complication such as chronograph readout, seconds, or date. The base of the dial is a sheet, sometimes gold, silver or copper and in order to create the dial and the hour marker, which is the indicator that is applied or painted on the dial, is an art in and of itself.
