The thin band engagement ring trend is on fire! Find out why we’re seeing more and more sleek, slender bands these days!

The thin band engagement ring trend has seen a rise in popularity over the last several years, from Kim Kardashian to recently engaged Dancing With The Stars couple Jenna Johnson and Val Chmerkovskiy.
We usually keep all the focus on the cut, color, carat and clarity of the diamond- which IS a major factor- but other ring details should not be overlooked.
This year we’re seeing a major trend in custom designed engagement rings, and the details can make all the difference! One aspect of the ring we don’t often consider is band thickness. This feature can often completely transform the entire look of an engagement ring.
Our clients love the way a thinner, more petit band perfectly highlights the center gemstone, providing a simple and elegant look. Skinnier bands will often feature accent diamonds that add subtle shimmer to the center stone, providing that extra wow factor.
The average engagement ring band width is around 2.5mm, but smaller bands from 1.5mm to 2mm are growing more common. It doesn’t sound like a big difference, but a single millimeter can make or break your engagement ring choice.
4 Considerations for the Thin Band Engagement Ring Trend:
1. Sturdiness
Thinner bands tend to become weaker with wear and as it comes into contact with other objects over time. Accent diamonds in a thin band cause the metal to be less substantial, so it’s important to choose a stronger option- like platinum, for a pave band.
Depending on the type of work your lady does, width may not be a big deal- but if she regularly plays sports, does any heavy lifting or has any rough duties on the job- it would be best to go with at least a 2mm band. Or use a stand in silicon band for heavy activity.
In addition, regular polishing and refinishing could weaken a thinner band overtime.
2. Weight
Skinnier bands use less material, resulting in a lighter ring. Less material is also less costly, and often savings can be transferred to a better quality material for the band or higher priced gemstone.
Lightweight bands also make for a more comforting fit, depending on her preference.
3. Stackability
Thinner engagement bands are easier to mix and match when it comes to adding a wedding band. Thin bands look good with both a wider wedding band or simple, smaller styles. We’re seeing more brides stack on the sparkle with multiple smaller bands for a unique look.
4. Presentation
Many bride-to-be’s have recently favored a more classic, minimal engagement ring, and for good reason. Dainty bands lay the foundation for a gemstone to really stand out and can make a smaller diamond appear much larger and brighter.
A large stone on a delicate band makes an even more gorgeous statement, but it’s not seen often due to concerns with a heavier gemstone on a weaker shank.
Thinner bands are perfect for those with daintier hands. Slender hands and fingers are easily overpowered by bands over 2mm in thickness, while smaller bands can look disproportionate on wider fingers.
