I might have mentioned that back in the day, before I creaked when I got up off the couch, I was a boxer. In fact, I was supposed to go to the Olympics for boxing in High School, but real life jumped in and the rest, as they say, has been a roller coaster ride of fabulous history. But, what types of sports watches did I wear when I was clobbering people? I honestly don’t remember, but I doubt it was anything worth remembering!
Of course, now I am very particular about the type of Sports watch I put on when I go out for a run, and I am REALLY particular about the watch I wear when I watch my son, Jonathan, compete in his triathlons! Hey, I gotta represent!
Seriously, it’s important to have the ‘right’ watch for the right sport, so I am going to give you my all time favorite serious sports watches that I like to match up for serious sports enthusiasts.
The Serious Sports Watch
The serious sports watch has to have a few features on it to even make it into this category, no matter which sport it is representing. It needs to be waterproof and the case needs to be shatterproof and scratch proof. It needs to be durable and strong and be able to withstand pressure and intense sweat, dirt and grime. It needs to be able to literally, take a licking and keep on ticking!
My List of Best Sports Watches for the Serious Sports Enthusiast (or if you just want to look good)
Triathlon Enthusiasts – Timex Ironman Triathlon Watch
This is the watch that my son uses and it is a beaut. Okay, it is not a beaut, but it is a great watch if you are training for a triathlon. This watch has a 99 lap counter and a 30 lap memory recall and a 100 hour chronograph with lap and split times. The face combines digital and analog and the white face lights up and glows, which makes it easy to read. This is a great training device for serious runners who want a serious sports watch.
Diving Enthusiasts – The Rolex Submariner
You had to know that I was going to say THAT one! No matter which model you buy, you can’t go wrong. Here are some specs on this super sports watch.
- Earlier models were water resistant to 660 ft. and later models, waterproof to a maximum depth of 980 ft.
- Has the Triplock system waterproof crown, featuring a triple gasket system
- Has a case made from a solid block of 904L stainless steel or gold
- Corrosion-resistant
- Utilizes a unidirectional bezel that enables the diver to memorize and follow immersion time
- Has the Perpetual rotor in the self-winding wristwatch mechanism
- Appeared in eleven James Bonds movies (Okay, that wasn’t pertinent to the watch, but I thought it was just really cool information!)
Seriously, do I need to say one more word? Didn’t think so!
Golf Enthusiasts – Richard Mille RM 038 Tourbillon
WOW! This is one fine as shit watch. Have you seen the complications on this thing? This is one of the lightest weight watches ever made and makes it perfect for golf. Many a pro golfer wears this watch and it stands up to the swings and sweat and conditions on the course as beautifully as the watch itself. In fact, I loved this watch so much I wrote about it here.
Soccer Dads – Graham Chronofighter Oversize Referee
Okay, so this watch is really used as a major referee watch for major sporting events, but it’s just so fabulous looking, that wouldn’t it look great if you were coaching your kid’s soccer games? I think it would! The Chronofighter Oversize Referee was based on the needs of the referees. The watch is light to wear and safe with a white dial to emphasize the 30 double-graduated minutes counter at 6 o’clock. The watch displays 3 counters. The minute counter shows an internal 40 minutes graduation, which times the halves of a game.
Perfect for a Sunday afternoon Soccer game!
Swimming Enthusiasts – Garmin Swim
I am not a swimmer. I am a floater, but if you are a lap enthusiast, then this is a great watch. The Garmin Swim tracks your distance, pace and stroke count. In other words, it counts your laps for you. Plus, it is ready to go as soon as you take it out of the box, which is great for those of you who don’t want to spend time setting all the settings before you get your swim on.
Even better, this watch goes for the attractive price of under $150.00.
Whether you are a sports enthusiast or a watching sports enthusiast, all of the above watches are great for sport or fun, and I would recommend them for both!
