Emerald cuts are getting all the love this engagement ring season, and we aren’t sad about it. On September 1st, Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Matthews got engaged.
Mahomes proposed to his long time love with a trendy rock. The ring featured a gorgeous, gigantic emerald (or possibly radiant) cut diamond ring worth six figures. We have all the intel on this native Texan couple and how Mahomes planned the proposal of a lifetime.
The Couple: Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Matthews
Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Matthews go way back. They’ve been together since they were teenagers back in their hometown of Tyler, Texas. They even attended prom together in 2013.
Patrick Mahomes
Mahomes is the all star quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, and Super Bowl MVP of the 2019 NFL season. He’s already a football legend, while not even a quarter of a century year old yet.
He became the only quarterback in history to throw for over 5,000 yards in a season in both college and the NFL. Genes may offer some explanation for his athletic prowess. His dad is former professional baseball player, Pat Mahomes.
So it’s no surprise the Chiefs wanted to lock him down. Mahomes signed the largest contract in the history of professional North American sports ever– a 10 year deal that totals $503 million after potential bonuses.
Brittany Matthews
Brittany Matthews is an athletic powerhouse all on her own. She played soccer for the University of Texas at Tyler, then played professionally for a season in Iceland.
Now she’s back in the U.S. and is a certified fitness trainer. She owns Brittany Lynne Fitness, which is a website that offers training programs and fitness merchandise.
The couple now reside in Kansas City with their two pups, Steel and Silver.
The Engagement Story
September 1st marked a doubly special day for Mahomes. He attended the Kansas City Chief’s ring ceremony and accepted his jewel studded Super Bowl ring. Then he turned around and gifted Matthews with an even more impressive diamond stunner.
Mahomes had part of the stadium blocked off for the big surprise. The decor included hundreds of white roses, countless white candles in glass votives, and marquee lights that read “Will You Marry Me?”
We don’t know exactly how he popped the question or what he said, but we’re guessing it was silky smooth. Matthews posted the following on Instagram after she said ‘Yes.’
The words you looked into my eyes and said to me at this moment, will NEVER leave my mind! You made this day perfect, you took my entire breath away and I could not have imagined anything better.

Afterwards, the couple celebrated their engagement with a private, romantic candle lit dinner on the terrace.
Now, about that ring….
The Engagement Ring
Mahomes announced the engagement with just the Instagram caption “#RingSZN. He spared no expense for his long time girlfriend of eight years.
Brittany’s diamond appears to be between 8-10 carats. It looks to be set on a white gold or platinum diamond-adorned double band. There is some debate on whether it’s an emerald cut or a radiant cut diamond.
A ring of that size and carat shape could be worth up to $800,000 depending on quality and specific characteristics of the center gemstone.
Hopefully clearer ring photos will emerge soon, but in the meantime we’re taking bets on the emerald or radiant cut status.
A radiant cut diamond is far more brilliant than an emerald cut, which features a ‘hall of mirrors’ effect. Based on the photos we’ve seen, our guess is a radiant cut, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to be an emerald cut.
Emerald cuts are popping right now. Demi Lovato recently received a giant emerald cut diamond ring, and Jennifer Lawrence earlier in the year as well.
