Michelle Young and Nayte Olukoya have more to celebrate than their recent Bachelorette engagement!
The couple made history as the The Bachelor franchise’s first couple of color. That’s something to celebrate considering the series’ 20 year history.
We have the inside scoop on Michelle’s gorgeous engagement ring! First, let’s get to know the couple (just in case you missed the last season of The Bachelorette).
The Couple
Michelle Young
Michelle Young is a 28 year old Minnesota native and 5th grade elementary school teacher turned reality TV star. She was the second runner up on season 25 of The Bachelor.
Last year, she became the 18th Bachelorette of the series.
How does a school teacher balance life while flying to and from LA? She told Jimmy Kimmel:
“Honestly, I feel like at the beginning, just in the school year, I was very clear with separating academics and personal life. My classroom, my kids, everybody — families and coworkers — have been super supportive and respectful of that.”
Nayte Olukoya
Nayte Olukoya was one of the history making final four (and now Michelle Young’s fiancé) on The Bachelorette season 18. This was the first time ever that all four remaining contestants were people of color.
Nayte actually received the first impression rose on the first night, so it’s fitting that he also received the last.
He is originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. When he’s not busy being a tv personality, Olukoya works as a Senior Account Executive for Indeed.com in Austin, Texas.
The Proposal
If you didn’t catch the episode live, here’s a replay of the romantic Punta Mita Mexican beach proposal:
The proposal happened on the season finale. Young presented Nayte with the final rose despite her fear of him not being ready for such a commitment.
She stated, “This has not necessarily been a smooth ride. But I’m also not willing to face that fear of walking away from this without you because I have never felt a love like this before.”
Luckily Olukoya was on the same page, and proposed with a ring designed by the franchise’s famed jeweler, Neil Lane.
The Engagement Ring
Nayte Olukoya chose a 3.2-carat pear-shaped sparkler set with 46 brilliant-cut diamonds and two tapered baguettes on the band.
The sparkler incorporates both vintage and modern aspects.
Vintage: The tapered baguettes are a nod to antique design and a classic addition on this stunning ring.
Modern: The pear shaped diamond is a more modern addition to the custom design. It’s a step away from the traditional brilliant round diamond, but still makes a timeless statement.

Neil Lane, the show’s longtime jeweler told People magazine, “The ring radiated Michelle’s beauty and lust for life.” He also noted, “It was like their relationship. Every time you turn the ring a little bit, you saw a different sparkle.”
Lane presents each Bachelor or Bachelorette contestant with six different ring options for the proposal. He shared with Page Six Style that each meeting lasts for hours, although only a few minutes of the process actually air on the show.
Who is Neil Lane?
The celebrity and Bachelor franchise jeweler hails from Brooklyn but started lending jewelry for award shows and red carpet events in LA in the early 2000s.
Soon after he began crafting custom engagement rings for celebrity couples. His early designs include rings for Madonna, Reese Witherspoon and Portia de Rossi.
The Bachelor nation recruited him over a decade ago, but he almost turned down the opportunity, stating he didn’t understand the concept. Once he tuned in he told People, “Then I got involved with the show and I understood it, it made sense. It didn’t seem real at first, but people were falling in love!”
Nuptial Details
The couple claim to prefer a short engagement, with potential wedding plans slated for summer 2022.
Michelle Young and Nayte Olukoya are currently house hunting in Minnesota after a very generous gift from The Bachelorette producers.
During the After the Final Rose episode, the couple was presented with a $200,000 surprise check for a down payment.
Congrats to the history making happy couple and best wishes for a lifetime of happiness.
