At Jonathan’s Fine Jewelers, we specialize in everything that sparkles and shines. One of our most popular requests before the holiday season is custom designed diamond studs.
We have the ability to make the design and purchasing process extremely easy for you while getting the most “wow” from her.
If you’d like to get your significant other diamond studs for the first time or give her an upgrade, Jonathan’s can help!
There are a few things you’ll need to know first about upgrading your wife’s diamond earrings:
1. What shape does she want?
We may be able to assist you with this one. Almost 95% of our custom diamond stud requests are for round brilliant cut diamonds, and for good reason: They are incredibly elegant, and one of the easiest shapes to find a great pair of matching stones.
In other words…they are foolproof! Don’t let that scare you off from other shapes like princess or cushion cut, but if you are not sure what she wants and want to absolutely nail the gift, you can’t go wrong with round brilliant cut.
When it comes to matching the pair of diamonds, we are the best in the business. Not only do we perfectly match the size, color, and clarity, but we go an extra step further and match table size as well.
One of the little-known facts about diamond earrings is that the table size is one of the main factors for two stones looking identical. If the table sizes are not similar, your diamond stud pair will not match nearly as well as they could.
2. Does white gold bother her ears?
Similar to the round brilliant cut, white gold is easily the most common metal used for diamond earrings. However, it’s important to remember that unlike other jewelry, diamond earrings go all the way through the skin.
If she commonly has allergic reactions to white gold, make sure you go with the hypoallergenic properties of platinum to avoid any issues.
3. Screwbacks, or pushbacks?
Yes, it matters, and yes, she will notice. They always notice. Everything.
We find that most customers prefer one type over the other, so channel your inner stealth and find out what type of backing her current earrings have before you drop by for your appointment at Jonathan’s.
4. How many prongs?
Believe it or not, the amount of prongs makes a huge difference in the style and fit of custom diamond earrings. 3 prongs is generally a sleeker, more modern look that fits flush with the ear. 4 prongs make the diamond look bigger, but the diamond basket does not sit into the ear the way a 3 prong basket does.
Also, with 4 prongs, the top of the diamond tends to sag forward slightly.
5. When would she wear them?
There are almost limitless options when it comes to custom designed diamond earrings. If you are having trouble deciding what you think your significant other would want, we can use our years of expertise to help you decide.
We can suggest different designs based on the amount and setting that she will be wearing them. She may want a different design for everyday wear than formal events, just let us know what you think the most common application would be and we can provide suggestions.
A few other items to consider:
When it comes to diamond earrings, the quality of the stones does not necessarily need to be the same as you would pick for an engagement ring. We find that the clarity and color on diamond earrings are not easily noticeable until customers are observing the diamonds from closer than two feet away (which won’t happen very often).
Going with a slightly lower quality of diamond is a savvy, unnoticeable way to cut down on the cost if you are trying to stay within a strict budget.
Remember, if you have purchased diamond earrings from Jonathan’s before or are planning to purchase them soon, that we can credit the purchase price of your existing diamonds towards the price of another set later down the road. This helps make a future upgrade much lighter on your wallet!
