For a lot of guys, this time of year is when the planning for their proposal really starts. Valentine’s Day is a great time to get down on one knee, but you need to be prepared! At Jonathan’s, we’ve seen almost every kind of successful proposal that there is. With a few simple tips, yours can be everything you and your future wife could have ever hoped for.
Here are 6 tips for pulling off the perfect marriage proposal:
1. Find an incredibly sentimental location
When it’s all said and done, the main things that she’ll remember are what you said to her, what the ring looked like, and where you were. The foundation for every proposal that goes well is the spot that you choose to do it.
When you’re picking out a location, you’ll want to make sure that it has a great backdrop for pictures (which we’ll discuss below), but more importantly, it needs to mean something.
Focus on places that have a strong meaning to both of you like where you met, your first kiss, or your first date. If none of those fit the bill, go for a stunning backdrop of mountains, the hill country, or the water.
2. Have a plan for pictures (or hire a professional)
This will take some simple planning, but you’re going to want to make sure that you get pictures and video so she can relive the moment whenever she’d like (and share on Facebook and Instagram at will).
If you can clue your family or friends in on what time you’re proposing, they can be close by to jump in and record the moment.
If they can’t do it, don’t be afraid to hire a photographer for the job. You’ll definitely get extra brownie points by having high-quality pictures and videos that she can keep forever.
3. Have a weather plan
Unfortunately, it rains a lot in Houston. Depending on how complicated your proposal idea is, you can always wait it out until there’s a good weather day (but admittedly that can still be a little dicey).
If you want to be ultra-prepared for any inclement weather that might come your way, choose a spot that has an indoor and outdoor option for you to pop the question!
4. Embrace the nerves
Let’s face it – you’re going to be nervous no matter how well you prepare. Even if you’ve been together for years, you may wonder if she’ll actually say yes, if she will love the ring (she will), or if she’ll be surprised.
Don’t feel like you have to make an epic speech or get everything right for her to say yes. Honestly, it will go by so fast that you might not even remember what you said after you get down on one knee anyway.
All you have to do is take a deep breath and go for it. She’ll say yes.
5. Have the tissues nearby
She’ll definitely be overwhelmed by the moment, and she’ll definitely start crying! If you have someone that is going to be taking pictures during and after the proposal, you’ll want to make sure that you can hand your new fiance a tissue or two to avoid any makeup mishaps.
6. Continue the celebration
One of the best things you can do after you propose is to keep the party going! Your parents and friends will be so excited to congratulate both of you, and more importantly, check out the new rock on her finger.
Last but not least, take some time to enjoy the moment. The wedding planning will be here before you know it.
