The number stamped inside your ring is not a size. It is not a model number. It is the single most important variable determining how much your gold jewelry is worth. That number — 10K, 14K, 18K, or 24K — tells you the gold concentration, and the gold concentration determines the melt value per gram. Understanding Gold Purity is crucial for every gold buyer.
At current spot prices above $4,300 per ounce, the difference between 10K and 18K gold is not academic — it is the difference between $58 per gram and $104 per gram. On a 30-gram bracelet, that gap is $1,380 in melt value. Understanding karat is the first step in understanding what your gold is actually worth. The Karat System — What Each Number Means
Pure gold is 24 karats. Every karat below 24 represents a proportion of gold mixed with other metals (alloys). The alloy metals give gold the hardness, color, and durability required for jewelry. Pure 24K gold is too soft for daily wear — it bends, scratches, and deforms under normal use.
| Karat | Gold % | Hallmark | Per Gram Value (at ~$4,300/oz) | Common Uses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24K | 99.9% | 999 | ~$138 | Coins, bars, some Asian jewelry |
| 22K | 91.7% | 916 | ~$127 | Indian/Middle Eastern jewelry, Gold Eagles |
| 18K | 75.0% | 750 | ~$104 | European luxury, Cartier, Tiffany |
| 14K | 58.3% | 585 | ~$80 | US standard, most American jewelry |
| 10K | 41.7% | 417 | ~$58 | Budget jewelry, class rings |
| 9K | 37.5% | 375 | ~$52 | UK standard, some imported pieces |
★ SERGIO NUNCIO — EXPERT INSIGHT
“I test a hundred pieces a month that are marked one karat but test as another. A ring stamped 18K that tests at 14K is not uncommon — either the original manufacturer mislabeled it, or someone replaced a component at some point with a lower-karat part. The stamp is a starting point. The acid test is the answer.”
10K Gold: The Minimum Standard
10K is the legal minimum to be labeled “gold” in the United States. It contains 41.7% gold and 58.3% alloy metals. It is harder and more scratch-resistant than higher karats — which makes it popular for class rings, everyday jewelry, and budget-friendly pieces.
The trade-off is value. At $58 per gram, a 10K piece is worth roughly 42% less per gram than a comparable 14K piece. Sellers are often surprised by how little their 10K chains are worth — a thin 10K rope chain weighing 8 grams yields a melt value of only about $464.
14K Gold: The American Standard
14K is the most common karat in US jewelry. It contains 58.3% gold — enough for a warm yellow color while maintaining good durability. Most American engagement rings, wedding bands, bracelets, and necklaces made in the last fifty years are 14K.
At $80 per gram, 14K strikes the balance between wearability and value. It is also the karat where the selling math starts to feel meaningful — a 14K gold bracelet weighing 25 grams is worth roughly $2,000 at melt in 2026.
18K Gold: The Luxury Standard
18K contains 75% gold. It is noticeably warmer in color than 14K, softer to the touch, and the standard for European luxury houses: Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Buccellati, and most Italian goldsmiths. Tiffany uses 18K for many of its gold pieces.
18K pieces are worth roughly 30% more per gram than 14K — and signed 18K pieces from luxury brands carry an additional resale premium above melt. A Cartier Love bracelet in 18K is not just gold-by-weight — it is a designer piece with secondary-market brand value.
24K Gold: Pure Gold
24K is 99.9% pure gold. It is the standard for investment-grade gold coins (American Eagles are 22K; Canadian Maple Leafs are 24K), gold bars, and some Asian jewelry traditions. 24K is too soft for rings and bracelets — it deforms under daily wear. Its value is pure metal: $138 per gram at current spot, with no alloy dilution.

How to Find the Karat of Your Gold
- Look inside the band (rings), on the clasp (necklaces and bracelets), or on the post (earrings) for a stamp: 10K, 14K, 18K, 417, 585, 750, 916, 999.
- Use a magnifying glass or phone camera zoom. Stamps are small — 1-2mm tall.
- If there is no stamp: the piece may be gold, gold-plated, or gold-filled. Only professional testing can confirm. Bring it to JFJCO — we test for free.
- “GP” or “GEP” means gold-plated. “GF” or “1/20” means gold-filled. Neither has significant melt value.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does higher karat always mean more valuable?
Per gram of total weight, yes — higher karat means more gold per gram and more value per gram. But total value also depends on weight. A heavy 14K chain can be worth more than a light 18K ring simply because it weighs more.
Is 24K gold a good investment?
24K gold in coin or bar form is the standard precious metals investment. As jewelry, 24K is impractical for daily wear. If your goal is investment, coins and bars offer the most efficient gold-per-dollar ratio.
Can gold lose its karat over time?
No. Gold does not degrade, tarnish, or lose purity. A 14K ring from 1950 is still 14K in 2026. The gold content is permanent. What changes is the surface condition — scratches, wear, polishing — but the gold concentration is chemically fixed.
