A fancy diamond isn’t a diamond that walks around with lots of bling surrounding it. It doesn’t have a halo or lots of stones everywhere and it doesn’t even have to be big. A fancy diamond doesn’t have to go to balls or wear fancy dresses or go to fancy restaurants. A fancy diamond doesn’t have to have an expensive car or expensive clothes. In fact, a fancy diamond doesn’t even have to be fancy.
What Make a Fancy Diamond Fancy?
Any shaped diamond other than a round shape. Any cut of diamond that is not a round brilliant cut.
Why Are Fancy Cuts Considered Fancy?
Fancy cuts or shapes provide a way for you to express your individuality. They don’t appeal to the traditional guy or gal, but their versatility when it comes to design makes them great for uses in multi-diamond jewelry. In other words, they are often used as side stones or as accent stones, and main stones that have side stones and accent stones.
Although various shapes have been popular over the years, in general the shapes and cuts of fancy diamond are cyclical just like fashion. For us, we seem to be seeing a lot of cushion sales and then next to that would be the oval and the emerald cut.
Considerations When Buying Fancy Cuts?
Some things to consider when you are buying a fancy cut diamond that are different than when you are buying a round brilliant cut diamond is that the clarity is important. The inclusions on a table that is larger, such as on an oval shape or an emerald shape stone, you need to be sure that you can’t see the inclusions and that they are either hidden by the prongs or not directly under the table.
Another consideration is the actual shape of the fancy diamond. Is the pear too fat or the marquise too thin? Is the heart too wide or the oval too round? Unlike the round brilliant cut, which has precise measurements, for the fancy diamond, it is more a matter of taste than a matter of precision. The GIA still has grading standards that they use to say what they feel are the best proportions, but because these are not your standard stones, the most important factor you can go by if you are buying a fancy diamond is your own eye to judge what you like and want.
My Thoughts on the Fancy Diamond
I prefer a fancy diamond. My wife has an emerald cut with trillions set in platinum, which to me is one of the more traditional engagement rings.
