Gifts for Men – Dog Tags
Choosing a gift for the man in your life could be challenging. Let’s face it, men just don’t want clothing or socks anymore. Sometimes you need to think outside the box and find a gift that they will keep for the rest of their lives! Usually jewelry doesn’t come to mind for a guy’s gift (unless it’s a Rolex), but we have found that dog tags tend to do well with men.
Honestly in the past few months, we have sold quite a few customized dog tags. It might be the one piece of jewelry that any man would want to wear. Dog tags are usually stainless steel, but darker shades like “gunmetal” and brushed silver are also common choices.
History
While identification tags for military personnel have dated back to Roman times, the more modern version that we all recognize is rooted in World War 1. The British military created “identification disks” made of aluminum. The U.S. officially adopted the tags in 1907 to help identify deceased soldiers on the battlefield. The modern tags have the following information format:
Last Name
First Name
Social Security Number
Blood Type
Religion
Endless Customization
One of the great things about dog tags is the endless amounts of customization! You can inscribe a special message on the back, your anniversary or even the birthday of your children.
Another cool trend that we have seen with these is adding other pendants or charms (don’t call them that in front of him) to the dog tag’s chain. If he was in the military, you can add a chevron rank insignia or something as simple as a “dad” pendant.
