The final celebrity engagement story this month features Taraji Henson and Kelvin Hayden, who got engaged on Mother’s day of this year.
The Couple
Tarahi Henson is an Oscar nominated actress and director that’s held roles in Karate Kid, Hustle and Flow and most recently Hidden Figures. She also plays Cookie on current TV series, Empire and it just got picked up for a 5th season.
If you’re a football fan, you may have seen former Super Bowl winning NFL star Kelvin Hayden racking up tackles and interceptions as cornerback for the Indianapolis Colts, the Atlanta Falcons or with the Chicago Bears.
They met three years ago when Henson’s makeup artist insisted the single mom put herself out there. So was it a blind date? A mutual friend’s charity event? Nope- her friend and makeup artist arranged a party full of eligible bachelors for Henson to mingle with. Sounds low key.
She saw photos of the invited guys before the event and immediately became enamored with Hayden. Fast forward to the actual party, where Henson arrives and is greeted by all her suitors. (We promise this is not an episode recap of The Bachelorette.)
Looking for Hayden the entire time, she said it was like the Red Sea parted and angels sang when he finally walked over to her. They danced and talked and privately dated for 2 years, until she finally announced they were an item in December of 2017.
The Engagement Story
Before popping the question, Hayden kept asking her if she ever wanted to get married and even hinted he would propose in six months after purchasing the ring on a trip to Dubai. She expected him to ask on her birthday, but he just couldn’t wait.
Kelvin took his lady out to dinner to celebrate Mother’s Day this year and gifted her a Cartier love bracelet for the occasion. It just so happened to be the same Chicago restaurant where they had their first date.
After finishing their meal, Kelvin led her to the party room, where he claimed one of his boys was having a birthday gathering the same evening and they were just going to stop in.
She walks in to a violist playing and when she turned around, Hayden was on one knee asking her to marry him. Henson announced the news on her Instagram account, saying she almost passed out and that #sheisofficallyoffthemarket!
They celebrated over chocolate covered strawberries and cake with a chocolate syrup “Congratulations” on the platter. For someone that had kept the relationship quiet for so long, she couldn’t WAIT to show off her new bling!
The Ring
Henson’s been flashing her diamond ring all over the red carpet recently, and we can’t blame her.
Hayden flew to Dubai to pick up the custom designed, round-cut diamond in a solitaire setting with a rose gold band. We don’t know the exact size, but it’s pretty damn extravagant.
