It’s that time of year! No- we aren’t talking about holiday lights, winter wonderlands, or letters to Santa. It’s engagement season. We’ve sold many a custom designed ring this year and seen several of this year’s trends here at Jonathan’s. Don’t pretend like your social media feed isn’t full of proposal videos right about now!
One trend that began with Meghan Markle’s engagement ring doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon- yellow gold bands. The latest celebrity to receive a similar style ring is Meg Ryan.
Yes, the same Meg Ryan from legendary 80’s films Top Gun and When Harry Met Sally is now engaged to another 80’s icon- musician and classic rocker John Mellencamp.
THE COUPLE
The pair has flown under-the-radar since their ‘on again, off again’ relationship began in 2010. In 2014 they called it quits due to the long distance between their homes and ultimately their lives. She’s a big city New Yorker, while he preferred the ‘Small Town’ life in Indiana and South Carolina.
The couple reunited in 2017 after Mellencamp hinted that he wanted to reconcile during his appearance on The Howard Stern Show. A few months later, they were photographed together and have been seeing one another since.
THE ENGAGEMENT STORY
No one really knows how it happened, since the couple cherish their privacy. Meg announced it on Instagram, with a goofy caricature and one word ‘ENGAGED!’
Let’s just say it’s probably no grand gesture on top of a ski slope or on the pitchers mound in a rented out MLB stadium. At ages 56 (Meg) and 66 (Mellencamp), the pair have both been married and divorced, so the low key announcement is understandable.
Mellencamp has been married three times prior, while Meg was married to Dennis Quaid previously for 10 years. Together, they will have seven children from past relationships.
THE RING
Meg Ryan’s engagement ring looks to be a round solitaire dimaon weighing between 1.5 to 2 carats. It’s set on a wide, solid gold band and is estimated to cost north of $12,500 (a modest figure compared to many of our engagement stories), according to Kathryn Money, the vice president of strategy and merchandising at Brilliant Earth.
Rose and yellow gold bands have been trending for several years with celebrities like Blake Lively in 2012 to Lauren Conrad and more recently Meghan Markle and Hailey Baldwin this year.
We’ve seen gold in both a wide band like Meg’s and most often in the more delicate, thinner band trend.
