Buying a Diamond – Advantages of Shopping In Person vs. Buying a Diamond on the Internet

Already, Zimbabwe has held two auctions at The Antwerp World Diamond Centre, which equaled 1,239,654 in carats sold. If all goes as planed, by the end of the year, Zimbabwe will have added 12 million carats of diamonds into the marketplace.

The Marange Diamond Field in Zimbabwe, produces diamonds with a gray/brown color tint. Currently the GIA measures the clarity, color, cut, and carat size of a stone, but it fails to measure the tint – which means you will never see a color tint mentioned on a GIA certificate.

Tinted diamonds are considered less desirable and are traded at a 25% discount to there non-tinted equivalent. Diamond dealers have known about this industry secret for decades and many use it to their advantage. If you can purchase a diamond at a 25% discount and sell it on the GIA certificate alone, it is very possible that you could increase your profit by 25% instantly.

Why Not To Purchase a Diamond Online

The color tint a diamond could be a main factor in this discrepancy. Without seeing the diamond up close, the consumer would never know they are purchasing a grayish/brownish-tinted stone.

The first rule of thumb when purchasing a diamond is to view every diamond you are considering in person. Purchasing a diamond based solely on a certificate (or on the Internet) is a mistake. When working with a diamond dealer, ask to see a few diamonds to compare. If the dealer is honorable, they will point out any flaws that would affect the primary sale and future sales of the diamond you are considering.

Not All Flaws Are Flaws

[dt_fancy_image style=”1″ border=”0″ lightbox=”false” animation=”none” align=”center” width=”275″ media=”” image_alt=”” hd_image=”http://jfjco.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Top_Brown_Tint.jpg” image=”http://jfjco.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Top_Brown_Tint.jpg”][/dt_fancy_image]Viewing the diamond in person will also allow you to determine which flaws you can live with and which you cannot. In most cases, the average person cannot detect flaws or color tints to a diamond. If you are working on a budget, this could be a huge cost savings to you. Having the opportunity to compare a diamond to another in person is the only way to be sure you are getting the best diamond for your budget. Purchasing a diamond without seeing it in person, is just asking for trouble.
