Roses are red, Diamonds are Blue…
Petra Diamonds Limited, has just announced that they have unearthed a 122.52 carat blue diamond from the Cullinan mine in South Africa. This is a rare and huge find. Expected to go up for sale sometime in July, this is a diamond that will surely become apart of history as a part of a royal jewelry collection.
This is not the first time the Cullinan mine has made the news. In 1905, the largest rough diamond ever found was discovered there – and when I say largest, I mean 3,106 carats! This diamond was later cut into two separate stones, both of which ended up as part of a royal collection. One stone is part of the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London, while the other is set in the Imperial State Crown.
Another famous blue diamond is the Hope Diamond. Sized only at 45.52 carats, The Hope Diamond won’t hold a candle to this latest discovery. As a lover of diamonds and history, I am eager to see how this diamond will be cut and polished. I am also eager to see where this diamond will end up. There are not many people that can afford the price tag of such a rare stone- a stone that will no doubt become a part of diamond history.
