Are you starting to wonder if it’s time to propose? Marriage is a serious financial and emotional decision that should never be taken lightly. Here are a few things to consider before you pop the question.
9 reasons you are ready to propose in 2016:
Your finances are in order
While life is about much more than money, you and your partner’s finances totally combine at marriage. Whatever financial assets or liabilities you both have become completely shared. Make sure you know about each other’s spending habits, existing debt, or anything else related to money that could cause issues down the road. Money is never something you want to stand in the way of a great marriage.
You’ve been open about your future goals
Hoping to move overseas for that incredible job opportunity soon? Planning on living in the mountains for a year? You don’t want kids? These are all important things that you need to share with your significant other before you get on one knee. The last thing you want is to surprise your future wife with a major lifestyle change right after the honeymoon.
You know she’s ready too
We’ve all seen the videos of the guy that proposes at the basketball game, just to get denied in front of 18,000 people. You still want an engagement to be a surprise, but make sure you’ve had a conversation about your future together first.
She’s your best friend
Your wife should be someone you can confide in, share your successes and failures with, and generally just have an awesome time with. If you aren’t sure that you could be alone together for days at a time, you probably aren’t ready to ask the question yet.
She is starting to drop hints
You’ve got to remember – women grow up their entire lives mentally planning their wedding. When they are ready, you’ll probably know it. If she is starting to show you rings on Pinterest or asks about what you would name a future kid, she’s basically saying “it’s time”.
The family is getting involved
If you thought that pressure from your girlfriend was tough, try suffering through grandma and the rest of the family asking you when you’re getting married every time you see them. Family members have no problem showing their impatience when they feel like it’s been too long. Don’t let them pressure you too much, but realize that you might be waiting too long.
You’ve got your stuff together
If you are killing it in your career and life in general, you might be ready for marriage. Marriages are always easier when you’ve got your career and personal life on lockdown. Make sure you have a clear plan moving forward in your professional life and know what you bring to the table in a marriage.
You’re ready to be committed
If you still have the equivalent of a black book in your contact list, you might want to rethink some things. Marriages are about trust and commitment, and having 100+ extra-curricular phone numbers probably isn’t a great idea.
Your friends approve
This one isn’t necessarily mandatory to have a successful marriage, but it makes things a lot easier. Talk to your friends and see if they think she is the one. You might be surprised what they have to say!
